Family Business Culture for Sustainability in an Era of Turbulent Change

Different Cultural Perspectives of Family Businesses in Asia

Most family businesses desire long term sustainability for their organisations. Globalisation, while under attack currently, is usually a necessity for most companies to be sustainable in the long term, especially in an era of turbulent change caused by political and technological changes.

Family businesses, like many other forms of business, have had trouble globalising themselves. Globalisation could be through entry into foreign markets – either on their own, through establishing partnerships/joint ventures with other businesses, or even attempting mergers & acquisitions in other countries.

Similarly, the stewardship and continuity of family businesses are fraught with challenges in today’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment. While each challenge is different, underlying each one of them is the organization’s capacity in, or lack of, cultural intelligence. It is this combination of the insights, competencies, attitudes, and behaviours – that enables the organization to assess intercultural situations accurately, in order to engage effectively in these global and uncertain environments.

In this conference we can look forward to family business owners, academics and corporate executives speaking about the difficulties and how they have tried to overcome them from their own cultural perspectives.

This conference is an initiative of NTU – NBS Centre for Business of Culture, led by Professor Ravi Kumar, with the support of Family Business Network Asia (FBN Asia).

About BoC
At the Centre for Business of Culture (Nanyang Business School, NTU), we are passionate about developing and teaching original knowledge on creating value and succeeding in different global cultures, as well as the means to developing a thriving and sustainable business or organisational culture. Our mission is to impart this knowledge to produce culturally intelligent graduates, who will in turn lead the next generation of successful and sustainable businesses.

Long considered marginal to the core business functional areas that presume rationality, aspects of behavioral decision-making have recently drawn the attention of scholars and practitioners. In our worldview, culture strongly influences behaviour and in turn, all aspects of business, whether it be cultural differences between employees of diverse nationalities or aspects of business units operating in different cultural geographic settings.

Business leaders and budding global entrepreneurs are increasingly looking to obtain quality and relevant education in this field, and it is in BoC’s interest to help facilitate such important learning.
