Programme Overview

Emerging markets today, leaders of tomorrow.

McKinsey provides a bold projection that, by 2025, an impressive 40% of the world’s large enterprises will be family or founder-controlled businesses from emerging markets.  In Asia, especially China, the imminent transfer of enormous wealth from the founding generation to the second is coinciding with the pressures of rising costs, shifts in business models with disrupting technology, and changing mind-sets amongst Next Gen and millennials.

A recent study by Shanghai Jiatong University showed 80% of the next generation do not want to join the family business, shared Professor Roger King, Adjunct Professor of Finance and Founding Director of Tanoto Center for Family Business at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. It is no wonder that only a mere 3% – 5% of enterprises last beyond the proverbial third generation, 富不过三代.

Faced with the challenge of motivating and grooming successors to sustain their business, Asian business families are grateful that some family members who were initially resistant to joining their families in business developed new perspectives after attending programmes dedicated to family business, and networking and learning from other business families. Some even decide to join and take over their family businesses.

How do families overcome business challenges and critical issues unique to families in business to transfer their values, wealth and business to successive generations?

This 2-day family business Masterclass, by families for families, brings together academic expertise on Asian family businesses, family consultants, wealth management experts, and most important of all, collective wisdom from Asian family business leaders themselves, who will share their insights and lived experience on managing the challenges of sustaining business across generations.
